Rob Thornton, AIA, Principal

Rob Thornton graduated in 1986 from the University of Idaho's School of Architecture. A native of the Pacific Northwest, Rob has worked with a variety of firms in Portland, Seattle, and Boise, on a vast array of projects, in the past twenty years. He is licensed in Washington and Idaho, and has NCARB and LEED certification. His professional experience and adherence to design integrity allow him to create beautiful, functional buildings regardless of the project's parameters. Rob teaches at the University of Idaho’s School of Architecture, at the university’s Urban Research and Design Center.

Rob grew up in Salem, Oregon, and moved to Boise in 1992 to raise his family, enjoy the many outdoor activity opportunities available here, and practice architecture in a city with a small but vital art community. In 1998, he founded Erstad Thornton Architects with partner Andy Erstad, and together they developed a firm whose driving concept was integrity of design combined with integrity of service, a concept Rob continues to develop, expand upon, and adhere to in RTA.

Jim Herndon, Intern Architect

Jim Herndon graduated with his master's degree from the University of Idaho in 2006. He returned to his hometown of Boise in the summer of 2005 to participate in the Idaho Urban Research and Design Center program. Here he was able to gain more insight into urban architecture and planning. Jim enjoys the abundance of recreational activities that Southern Idaho has to offer as well as its growth potential. He enjoys working at RTA because of the firm's small atmosphere and big ideas.
